A 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED screen and a 4000mAh battery mean the Galaxy S20 still feels current, six years on. Most of the ones we see in the workshop need one of four things sorted: the screen, the battery, the charging port or a cracked back cover.

Common questions

Is my S20 the 4G or the 5G model, and does it matter?

It matters for the quote. SM-G980F is the 4G S20 sold in South Africa and an S20 price covers that model, while SM-G981B is the 5G version, which is identical to look at but a different device to order parts against. Settings, About phone, Model number will tell you in a few seconds.

My S20 does not feel as smooth as it used to. Is the screen failing?

Usually not. The S20 only runs its 120Hz refresh rate at Full HD+, so if the resolution has been set to Quad HD+ the display drops back to 60Hz, and the phone also steps down to 60Hz when it gets hot or when power saving is on. Check Settings, Display, Motion smoothness first. If it is already set to High and the phone still stutters, then it is worth having someone look at it.

The S20 is a 2020 phone. Which repairs still add up?

The battery at R1 450 and the charging port at R1 267, comfortably. A March 2020 phone with a 4000mAh cell and a 120Hz screen still holds its own, and either of those keeps it going. The two to think about are the screen at R5 606 and the back cover at R1 714, which are the dearest parts on the phone because the S20 is glass front and back with a curved display.
